Celebrating Life & Culture at Groundswell

Moving to Canada has been one of the biggest challenges I have ever had in my life, but one of the most gratifying too. I left my family, friends, and lifestyle as I knew it to pursue something better for my wife and future family. 

Luckily I came to find a very welcoming and charming community here in Groundswell. Since the first day, they helped me settle by recommending neighbourhoods where I could stay. They provided reviews and even suggestions for the places they knew, such as Mexican restaurants,  stores where I could find some Mexican stuff, or better options for groceries. 

Let me be honest. I definitely miss my family and the food, A LOT; even though we can find everything here, the taste is not always the same, or the dishes/ingredients are not that easy to find. Regarding family, well, I am pretty sure I do not need to explain what it is like to be thousands of kilometres away from the people you love. That is why it is important to me to keep my traditions and my culture because it is the way I have to honour my parents and my ancestors, my friends, and even our dead.

Before moving to Vancouver, I had to admit that I had my doubts. I was leaving my hometown and was afraid my wife (or even myself) couldn’t stand the cold. We also have a dog we could bring here, but I was nervous about flying him to Vancouver. I didn’t know if we would adapt to the new culture, job, new people, or even a different language. 

Luckily, once we arrived and had the opportunity to see the city, we fell in love with it. So many green views, hikes, beaches, lakes, etc., many things to do that I could not imagine before coming here. I’m not going to lie, the cold and the rain still gets me sometimes, and winter can get depressing, but all the good things Vancouver has to offer have made it so much easier.

When my wife first came to Vancouver one week before her birthday, I decided to throw her a party even though she didn’t know anyone. Still, many folks from the Groundswell family agreed to go to her party. We ended up at the Red Room (if you don’t know it, let me know, and we can fix that) at 3 am dancing and partying with some of the guys from the team. That really meant a lot to both of us; they were willing to meet my wife and make her feel welcomed and special that day. Besides, they showed me that partnership goes beyond work and that we can have deeper relationships outside of work which as a newcomer means a lot.

Now, speaking about celebrations, on November 2nd, we are celebrating “El Dia de Los Muertos” (Day of the Dead). This tradition is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink, and celebration. On the Day of the Dead, it’s believed that the border between the spirit world and the real world dissolves for 24 hours. During this brief period, the souls of the dead awaken and return to the alive world to feast, drink, dance, and play music with their loved ones. In turn, the living family members treat the deceased as honoured guests in their celebrations and leave their favourite meals and other offerings at gravesites or on the ofrendas built in their homes. Ofrendas can be decorated with candles and bright marigolds called cempasuchil alongside bread, liquor, pozole, or any traditional dish.

By the way, did I mention how beautiful our beaches are in Mexico? Well, I have a small sample for you (please don’t be jealous):

As you can see, management never rests. Even with that beautiful background I was attending my meetings while my wife was enjoying sunbathing and piñadas all day; I guess somebody has to do the dirty job. 

But let me tell you, even though I was having a blast back in Mexico, I knew I was coming back to Vancouver sooner or later.

Here at Groundswell, I am learning so many new things, not only about new technologies but also about management strategies. I know about other cultures, ways of work and I feel part of a team that really cares about people. That has made all the challenges from moving to another country way more bearable and manageable. 

Groundswell is a charming place to work. No regrets on our decision to move to Canada but moreover, no regrets about joining Groundswell.

Celebrando Vida y Cultura a Groundswell 

Mudarse a Canadá ha sido uno de los mayores desafíos que he tenido en mi vida, pero también uno de los más gratificantes. Dejé a mi familia, amigos, y estilo de vida como lo conocía para perseguir algo mejor para mi esposa y futura familia.

Afortunadamente vine a encontrar una muy acogedora y encantadora comunidad aquí en Groundswell. Desde el primer día, me ayudaron a asentarme recomendando barrios donde podría quedarme. Ellos me proporcionaron críticas e incluso sugerencias de los lugares que conocían, como restaurantes mexicanos, tiendas donde podría encontrar algunas cosas Mexicanas o mejores opciones de comestibles. 

Déjame ser honesto. Yo definitivamente extraño a mi familia y a la comida, MUCHO. Aunque podemos encontrar de todo aquí, el sabor no siempre es el mismo, o los platos/ingredientes no son tan fáciles de encontrar. En cuanto a mi familia, bueno, estoy bastante seguro de que no hace falta que explique lo que es estar a miles de kilómetros de las personas que amas. Por eso es importante para mí mantener mis tradiciones y mi cultura porque es la forma que tengo de honrar a mis padres y a mis antepasados, a mis amigos, y hasta a nuestros difuntos.

Tengo que admitir que tenía mis dudas antes de mudarnos a Vancouver. Estaba dejando mi ciudad natal y tenía miedo de que mi esposa (o incluso yo mismo) no pudiera soportar el frío. También estaba nervioso porque tenemos un perro y no sabía si podíamos traerlo en el vuelo sin ningún problema.  No estaba seguro  si nos adaptariamos a la  nueva cultura, trabajo, nueva gente e inclusive el lenguaje.

Afortunadamente una vez que llegamos tuvimos la oportunidad de ver la ciudad y nos enamoramos de ella. Mucha naturaleza, montañas, playas, lagos, etc y también muchas cosas por hacer que no me había imaginado. No voy a mentir, el frío y la lluvia todavía me deprimen de vez en cuando pero todas las otras cosas buenas lo han hecho mucho más fácil. 

El cumpleaños de mi esposa fue una semana después de que llegó a Vancouver.  Entonces decidí organizar una fiesta con los amigos de Groundswell y aunque ellos no la conocían accedieron a ser parte del festejo. Ese día terminamos en el bar Red Room until 3am ( si no lo conoces, es muy recomendable para la comunidad latina). La verdad significó mucho para nosotros que el equipo de Groundswell no dudó en compartir ese festejo con la intención de hacer sentir bienvenida a mi esposa. 

Ahora, hablando de celebraciones y tradiciones, el 2 de Noviembre, nosotros celebramos “Day of the Dead” (El Dia de Los Muertos). Esta tradición es una fiesta Mexicana donde las familias dan bienvenida a las almas de sus familiares difuntos para una breve reunión que incluye comida, bebida, y ofrendas. En El Día de Los Muertos, se cree que la frontera entre el mundo de los espíritus y el mundo real se disuelve durante 24 horas. Durante este breve período,  las almas de los muertos se despiertan y regresan al mundo vivo para festejar, beber, bailar, y tocar música con sus seres queridos. A su vez, los  miembros de la familia viviente tratan a los difuntos como invitados de honor en sus celebraciones y dejan sus comidas y otras ofrendas en las tumbas o en los altares construidos en sus casas. Las ofrendas pueden decorarse con velas y caléndulas brillantes como el  cempasúchil, juntos con comida, licor, pan o cualquier plato tradicional.

Por cierto, mencioné lo hermosas que son nuestras playas en Mexico? Bueno, tengo una pequeña muestra para ti (por favor no te pongas celoso):

Como puede ver, la administración nunca descansa. Incluso con ese hermoso paisaje yo asistía a mis reuniones mientras mi esposa disfrutaba tomando el sol y piñadas todo el día; supongo que alguien tiene que hacer el trabajo. JaJa. 

Pero déjame decirte que, aunque me lo estaba pasando genial en México,  sabía que tarde o temprano regresaría a Vancouver. Aquí en Groundswell, estoy aprendiendo muchas cosas nuevas, no solo sobre nuevas tecnologías sino también sobre estrategias de gestión y liderazgo. Conozco otras culturas, formas de trabajo y me siento parte de un equipo que realmente se preocupa por la gente. Eso ha hecho que todos los desafíos de mudarse a otro país sean más llevaderos y manejables. Groundswell es un excelente lugar para trabajar. No me arrepiento de nuestra decisión de mudarnos a Canadá pero, además, no se arrepiente de unirnos a Groundswell.
